Bluray-levyt ovat saaneet nimensä siitä, että tekniikassa käytetty aallonpituus muodostaa sinisen lasersäteen. Säteen aallonpituus on 405 nm, kun taas esim. DVD-levyissä käytetty 650 nm muodostaa punaisen lasersäteen. Koska aallonpituus on tavanomaista pienempi, dataa on mahdollista tallentaa tiheämmin. Tämän ansiosta levylle mahtuu aiempaa enemmän tiedostoja.
